Sides of Marriage

You may ask why I chose the topic of Gay Marriage, so I will tell you. I have known many gay couple and just gay individuals, and they are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I myself am bisexual so say that yes I do like both sexes. The only two people in my family who know about this are my mom and my sister in law; I had always heard my mom say that it was disgusting so I was so afraid to tell her and she found out on her own. All my family is against same sex relationships and always make jokes and say rude things about it; my mother still does it but I don't think she does know how much it bothers me. She just tells me to get over it because I'm going to be hearing a lot of that throughout my life. What if one day I actually do fall in love with someone of the same sex so, I am writing this blog to show you and do research for myself on the laws of gay marriage
Everyone dreams of getting married when they are young and having a family when they grow up.  Being married is supposed to be one of the most amazing times of your life; if marriage was so great and amazing then why are some people denied that right? Why can’t people of the same sex get married? This is a very sensitive topic with many diverse opinions and there needs to be a change.
Some people say that religion is the biggest obstacle. Divorce between gay couples changed marriage, data was actually shown where straight marriage strengthened, divorce rates decreased, and marriage lasted longer. A study showed that banning gay marriage had rises in mood, anxiety, and substance disorders and people living in the states that didn’t ban gay marriage did now show these disorders. Twenty-nine states have banned same sex marriage due to the Defense Marriage Act and twelve states restricting marriage to gay couples. On August 4, 2010 the U.S. District Court in California said that Preposition eight –referendum restricting marriage to gay couples- was unconstitutional. The United States isn’t the only country with gay marriage laws; England as well as laws against gay marriage. It also is because of religious reason, because the church won’t marry the couple. Gay couples create incidents that shouldn’t be happening. The people are more concerned with the public value than private meaning.

The biggest reason people are against gay marriage is religion; people say that being gay is not religiously right and that in the bible it says that, “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable" (Baker). Marriage has been put on a pedestal by religious people, people just look at all the bad things that could happen in a homosexual relationship when the same exact things do happen in a straight relationship.  A traditional family is what is also looked at, gay couples cannot have their own kids like a straight couple but a gay couple could adopt and help a child who is in need. Just because a gay couple can have kids, doesn’t mean that they can’t have a so called “traditional family”.
The author of the first article feels very strongly about the topic of gay marriage; he himself is a gay individual who has faced many roadblocks over his lifetime. He feels as if religion was the biggest thing in the way; churches kept the ban on same sex marriage even though they “practiced” religious freedom. He felt like he would never be able to fall in love and get married because of all the emotional stress he had gone through, he thought that his heart was not capable of that anymore; then he met his husband and feels as if he is the luckiest person in the world. He says, “It is a rare privilege to spend your adult life fighting for a right that was first dismissed as a joke, only finally to achieve it in six states and Washington, D.C. But how much rarer to actually stumble upon someone who could make it a reality. (Sullivan)” He himself had his own bias on the topic and I think that it greatly affects the way he wrote the article. Since he is gay as well as just talking about it he puts his feelings and experience into the article. Between him having his own opinion and stating true facts this article is an example of about 50/50 solid evidence; like I said above he puts a lot of his own feelings and experiences into this work and a lot of facts. The article is both subjective and objective. The author included his own opinions and feelings and he also included facts. This source is very useful in the studying of gay marriage because give the opinion from a gay individual and supporting facts. This research has helped me find others opinions and feeling on the topic of gay marriage rights and religion.
As I did my own research I had to come up with a hypothesis: Why are there laws against gay marriage? Many states have laws against gay marriage and some do not; this topic is very controversial and everyone has their own opinion on it; some are for it and some are against it. People protest and fight everyday for their and others rights to be able to marry the same sex; I believe that people should be able to marry whoever they want because it’s not their fault for falling in love with someone of the same sex. Many of people are against it because of their religion and say that in the “Bible” it says that a man and woman should be married; well God made you who you are and loves you for the person you are. My target audience is everyone; the person could be whoever because I wanted to get as many diverse opinions as possible. The respondents that were chosen were based on getting a diverse group of people to express their views on the survey/topic. The results of this survey are reliable and valid because they were taken from random people whose opinions I did not know. My information is not biased at all, because all of the information and results were taken straight from random people and not myself, results:

Do you think that gay marriage should be legal?
On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is having a “free country” to you?
Check all that apply to you:
Gay marriage is legal in some states:
What percent of people do support gay marriage?
Do you agree or disagree that people should be able to love who they want?
How would you feel if someone judged and bullied you from being gay?
Have you ever known someone who committed suicide because of getting bullied for being gay
25 out of 25 said yes
Everyone said 10
Most people said that they do support it. They all know someone gay.
Everyone said true
Most everyone said D. 80%
20 out of 25 said yes
A lot of people said that they would feel like they didn’t matter.
2 out of 25 people said yes.

Most people believe in Gay Marriage Rights; no one said that they thought that people of the same sex shouldn’t be married. When people answered question number ten on the survey most everyone came back with a defensive reply; they basically all said that they would fight for the right to marry whoever they wanted. When asked question number nine only two out of twenty-five people said yes, it was a shocking discovery to find that someone actually knew someone who committed suicide because of it. From doing my survey I concluded that there are laws against gay marriage because people are just ignorant. Most people really don’t mind gay couples, even if they don’t believe in it. A lot of people do support it, and most people think that gay marriage should be legal. (Sieverts, survey)

Evaluation 2!

There is no evidence in this article that the author has any connections. Also there is no lack of solid evidence since it is all based on facts and statistics. I would say that this article is objective because there is no bias from the author. The author included examples from another country, laws, and religious examples. This source is useful to my research due to the fact that it includes other countries views, laws and example of acts. This article can be useful in this study because it is unbiased and is a good source for a lot of acts and laws.
